 The Berrien County Sheriff's Department Tactical Response Unit (TRU) is comprised of deputies and officers from the St. Jospeh Police Department, Benton Harbor Police Department, and Benton Township Police Department who have been highly trained and equipped to handle hostage and critical incidents.
The TRU is available to assist with high risk search warrants and works in cooperation with the Berrien County Sheriff's Department Narcotics Unit, the DEA, the Michigan State Police Fugitive Team, as well as out of county calls for assistance. Officers assigned to the TRU must pass a series of tests and maintain monthly training to stay on the team.
The TRU team was formally known as the Special Weapons and Tactics (SWAT) team and was formed in late 1974 by Sheriff Forest (Nick) Jewell.
