End of Watch - October 17, 2012
Michael P. Moore, 35, of St. Joseph, passed away, Wednesday, October 17, 2012 at his home, surrounded by his family and friends, after a three year courageous battle against a rare soft tissue cancer, Myxoid Liposarcoma. Throughout his treatment, Mike remained positive, coming to work on light duty as often as possible and inspiring others to live life to the fullest.
Mike was born December 1, 1976 in St. Joseph. He graduated from Lakeshore High School in 1995, and from Kalamazoo Valley Community College Police Academy in 1997. Mike became a deputy with the Berrien County Sheriff’s Office on December 1, 1998, starting in the jail division where he worked for his first four years. Mike then transferred to the enforcement division as a patrol officer. Mike also worked part time for the City of Niles, New Buffalo City and Baroda/Lake Township Police Departments. On April 18, 2009, he married the love of his life Kellie (Hanners) in St. Joseph. Mike enjoyed traveling and rooting for Notre Dame and the Chicago Bears. On November 19, 2009, Mike received an award from the Berrien County Alcohol Task Force in recognition for his assistance in helping change the alcohol environment on Berrien County. Mike was also voted Deputy of the Year in 2010 by his peers.
Mike was courageous, honest, and dedicated to his department. In the words of Sheriff Bailey “Mike was loved by all who knew him. You never left his presence without a smile on your face. His devotion to his wife, his friends, and the brown uniform was absolutely amazing. His spirit will live on forever in the lives of those he touched."
